Rhinoplasty Post-Operative Care

Postoperative care guidance for rhinoplasty 1. Use two pillows to keep your head elevated when you sleep during the first week after surgery. 2.Ice packs for 72 hours after surgery, please do not apply pressure to the splint. 3.The first 48 hours of swelling is normal, and the heaviest swelling occurs 48-72 hours after surgery. The remaining 10% swelling will gradually dissipate within a year. The nose may feel stiff when smiling in the early stage and will not be as soft as before the surgery, which will not be noticed by bystanders and will gradually return to normal with time. 5.If you have a headache, you can take painkillers orally every 3~4 hours. It is better to take the medicine together with cookies and jelly, etc. If there is no pain, you do not need to take the medicine. 6.If symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, rash, shortness of breath or diarrhea occur after taking the medicine, or if fever (body temperature over 37.5℃), redness of surgical wound and increased pain occur, please contact the doctor immediately. 7.If you feel anxious, take Valium every 8 hours for the first 24~48 hours. Please do not take other sleeping pills when taking Valium. 8.On the day after surgery, eat only easily digestible food, the next day you can eat a semi-liquid diet, but avoid foods that make your lips move too much such as apples, corn on the cob, etc. for 2 weeks. 9.There may be bloody nasal discharge for 3~4 days after surgery, and it may be necessary to change the drainage gauze under the nose, please do not rub the nose or suck the nose, which will stimulate bleeding, and try not to sneeze. After there is no drainage, you can remove the drainage gauze and the cheek tape by yourself. 10.For the first 2 weeks after surgery, to prevent bleeding, please do not suck or blow your nose hard. Try not to sneeze, but if you cannot avoid it, please sneeze through your mouth. 11.If there is a large amount of bright red bleeding from the nose (drainage gauze needs to be changed every 30-40 minutes), please inform the doctor immediately. During this period, please sit still and apply pressure to the nose for 15 minutes, usually most of the bleeding can be stopped. 12. You can clean the edges of the nostril and all the sutures with a hydrogen peroxide soaked cotton swab to keep them clean, then apply a thin layer of erythromycin eye ointment, which will prevent scab formation, and also send the cotton swab into the nostril to clean up to the length where the cotton is, being careful not to go too deep. As long as the action is gentle, there will be no stinging pain inside the nose. 13.Please avoid strenuous exercise (which increases the heart rate by more than 100 beats per minute) for the first three weeks after surgery, and then slowly increase the amount of activity in the following two weeks, and return to normal in the third week. 14.Please avoid hitting the nose for 4 weeks after surgery. 15.Avoid lifting anything over 5kg for 3 weeks after surgery. 16.Post-operative nasal skin is sensitive to sunlight, so please pay attention to sun protection for 6 months. If you must be in the sun for a long time, please wear a wide brimmed hat and/or use a good sunscreen (SPF-20 or higher) that protects against UVA and UVB. 17. All wounds during the recovery period will be very sensitive to sunlight. To avoid direct sunlight, always use sunscreen protection (SPF-15 or higher). 18.If you have a nasal splint after surgery, wear it for at least 2 weeks within 24 hours, after that, please wear it at night before going to sleep and stick to it for 3 months. 19.While wearing the nasal splint, you can go to the beauty salon to wash your hair, and pay attention to prevent the nasal splint from getting wet. 20.After removing the nasal splint, use a soap with little irritation to gently wash the nose and apply makeup. If the nose is dry, use moist cream. 21.After removing the splint, do not wear glasses or put other things on the nose for 4 weeks. Frame glasses should be tied to the forehead with a band. For contact lenses, you can wear them as long as the swelling subsides to the point where you can put them in. 22.After rhinoplasty, the tip of the nose will sometimes feel numb, and occasionally the incisors will feel strange, these feelings will gradually disappear with the postoperative recovery. 23.After the removal of stitches and the removal of internal/external splints, it is recommended to gently remove the formed scabs from inside the nose with saline, especially if you have done intranasal surgery such as: septum reconstruction or after inferior turbinate removal, etc. 24. Furoma nasal drops can be used intermittently only for the first 2 weeks after surgery to improve nasal ventilation or to prevent ear/nasal discomfort when flying, etc.
