Chinese medicine for eye diseases

According to the theory of Chinese medicine, the human body is a complete system, and the eyes are closely related to the five internal organs of the human body. The classic work of Chinese medicine, “Huangdi Neijing”, says that the essence of the five viscera and six internal organs are all injected into the eyes as essence. The deficiency of any one of the five organs: heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney can cause eye diseases. Therefore, from the perspective of Chinese medicine, a healthy person is one who is balanced in all aspects, not biased towards Yin or Yang, not biased towards deficiency and not biased towards reality. In the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, it is also said that “when the righteousness exists within, the evil cannot dry up” and “where the evil is, its energy will be deficient”, which means that if a person’s resistance is strong, he will not get sick, and the reason why a person gets sick is because his resistance has decreased. Among the five organs, the liver is most closely related to the eye. According to Chinese medicine, the eye is the official of the liver, and the liver is open to the eye, and anger is the nature of the liver. Therefore, if a person is in a bad mood, angry or furious, it will cause liver qi stagnation, qi and blood imbalance, the eyes are not nourished and may cause blurred vision, or even blindness. Chinese medicine treats diseases, emphasizing the whole person and the need for evidence-based treatment. There are many different treatments for the same disease, and different diseases have the same dialectical treatment, which is the same disease and different treatment in TCM. A, Chinese medicine treatment of macular degeneration Chinese ophthalmology outpatients, at present the most come to see me is macular degeneration, suffering from macular degeneration often make people blurred vision or black shadow in front of the eyes obscured or visual objects deformation, discoloration, become smaller, causing great inconvenience and pain to people’s work and life. Macular degeneration is a general term, which includes macular degeneration, macular hemorrhage, “mid-pulp”, “mid-bleed”, macular fissure, macular anterior membrane, macular cystoid edema and so on. The “mid-pulp” and “mid-bleed” are more common in young people, while age-related macular degeneration is certainly more common in the elderly. Macular degeneration is more difficult to treat eye disease, most of these patients have been to several large hospitals, often is not cured before they come to Chinese medicine, some have done retinal laser or photodynamic therapy, but often the results are not good. For most of these patients, they have been treated by TCM for a period of time. Most of the hemorrhage, edema and exudation in the macula can be absorbed and subside, so that the visual acuity can be improved to different degrees. For some patients whose macula has formed mechanized scars, taking Chinese medicine can only stabilize their condition. For example, at the beginning of this year, I treated a young woman surnamed Huang, 27 years old, who had been working for just one year, with 0.1 vision in her left eye, incomplete bending, distorted and small vision for 2 months. I examined the fundus and found that the macula of the left eye was cloudy, infiltrated and exuded with hemorrhagic spots. Through six months of Chinese medicine treatment, the hemorrhage, edema and exudation in the macula basically subsided and the vision recovered to 0.8. Chinese medicine treatment for high myopia and macular hemorrhage We find that more and more teenagers are suffering from myopia nowadays, and the occurrence and development of myopia is mainly related to the power of using the eyes at close range. We ask students to read and write the distance between the eyes and the book should be one foot, that is, 30 centimeters, but many students do not do, long-term posture is not correct, the ciliary body in the eye regulation of excessive spasm, myopia will occur. There is also the widespread use of television, computers and cell phones in modern society, and watching television and computers for a long time will also contribute to the occurrence and development of myopia. From mild myopia to high myopia, high myopia can also cause many complications, such as vitreous clouding, macular hemorrhage, macular degeneration, concurrent cataract and macular fissure, etc., which bring great inconvenience to study and work, and such patients often consult me. Nowadays, many patients come to me directly for treatment of macular hemorrhage caused by high myopia. Through several months of TCM treatment, the macular hemorrhage can basically be absorbed and the vision can be significantly improved. As for the black shadows or “flashing sensation” caused by vitreous turbidity, some patients can get different degrees of improvement through the treatment of TCM for a period of time, while some can only make the condition stable and control its development. The treatment of various causes of fundus hemorrhage in Chinese medicine Modern society, due to the improvement of people’s standard of living, the usual life of eating and drinking, large fish and meat, high fat and high protein intake is too much, unreasonable diet, coupled with going out to drive or ride in a car, into the room by elevator, often resulting in insufficient exercise, excess nutrition. Often leads to a significant increase in hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. The human being is a whole and the heart carries out a large circulation through blood flow. The eye has a fine structure, with tiny blood vessels in the eye and a microcirculation within the eye. The increase in blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipids can often be seen in the blood vessels in the eyes, and the increase in the “three highs” often causes atherosclerosis of the retinal arteries in the eyes. If the arteries in the eye are hardened, it means that the arteries in the whole body are also hardened. Therefore, in hospitals, internal medicine, nephrology and endocrinology departments often ask ophthalmologists to consult with them for the purpose of understanding whether the retinal arteries in the eyes are hardened and the degree of hardening, so as to make clinical medical reference. Retinal arteriosclerosis often causes retinal hemorrhage and vitreous hemorrhage, and other eye diseases. People should be in sync with the laws of nature, rising at sunrise and moving, and sleeping at sunset and quiet. A healthy routine should be to wake up early and not go to bed too late, and to actively participate in outdoor activities for exercise. Chinese medicine treats intraocular hemorrhage, not by stopping the bleeding when it is seen, but by using a combination of disease identification and evidence identification, and implementing a method of evidence-based treatment. According to different situations, the method of benefitting Qi and stopping bleeding, clearing heat and cooling blood, tonifying liver and kidney, stopping bleeding and removing stasis, etc. are often used. With the proper treatment of Chinese medicine, patients with intraocular hemorrhage can often stop bleeding without leaving stasis and resolve stasis without causing new hemorrhage, and sometimes can turn their eyes into a safe place and regain their vision, which is often difficult to do with Western medicine alone. For example, Chen, a female, 46 years old, a bank employee from Jinhua, has been suffering from central retinal vein obstruction in the right eye for 8 months, and has consulted many major hospitals in Hangzhou and Beijing. The intraocular hemorrhage was large and did not absorb for a long time, and the doctor warned that it was likely to cause neovascular glaucoma and lead to blindness. When I received the patient, I found a large retinal hemorrhage with edema in the fundus of the eye, and the visual acuity was only 0.02. Through half a year of active treatment, all the hemorrhage in the fundus of the eye was absorbed, but due to the long time of the hemorrhage, it caused macular degeneration, and the visual acuity could only be restored to 0.4. The patient turned from a critical condition to a safe one, which made the patient very grateful. I often hear patients say, “I believe in TCM, because TCM has cured my difficult eye disease. I also hear people say that TCM is useless and that they should seek Western medicine when they are sick. I think Chinese medicine and Western medicine have different academic views, different theoretical bases and different treatment methods. Chinese medicine and Western medicine are like the difference between Chinese painting and oil painting, the appreciation value is different, some people like Chinese painting, some people like oil painting.
