Can hyperthyroidism come back after a decade of recovery?

Hyperthyroidism may recur even after it has been well for more than ten years, and regular rechecks are recommended. Most of the causes of hyperthyroidism are Graves’ disease. In China, most of the hyperthyroidism in Graves’ disease is still preferred to be treated with anti-thyroid drugs, such as propylthiouracil and methimazole, etc. The advantages of these drugs are that they are convenient and non-invasive, their efficacy is more certain, and they do not cause irreversible damages, but the disadvantages are that they have potential side-effects, a long course of treatment, and a high rate of recurrence. If there is a family history of hyperthyroidism, obvious goiter, high iodine diet, high titer of thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) antibody, mental stimulation, long-term recurrent infections and other factors, it may lead to a higher recurrence rate of hyperthyroidism. Patients with hyperthyroidism are advised to undergo regular rechecks after remission and to seek prompt medical attention when there are uncomfortable symptoms.
