Aims and principles of cerebral palsy rehabilitation assessment

1. Purpose: (1) To collect information about the child’s physical functioning status, family situation and social environment, and to characterize the dysfunction of the child. (2) To quantify the abilities possessed by the child. (3) To analyze the difference between the degree of functional impairment and the normal standard. (4) To provide a basis for the development of a rehabilitation training program. (5) To provide an objective basis for the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment. (6) To propose criteria for the classification of disability level and to provide a basis for rehabilitation and return to society. 2. Principles: (1) The procedure of assessment can be divided into collecting information, analyzing and researching, setting goals and formulating treatment plans. (2) Emphasize the importance of overall developmental assessment, which should be based on the overall development of normal children as a comparison, and carry out a comprehensive assessment of the body and mind. In other words, the child should be regarded as a whole for comprehensive assessment, not only assessing the motor dysfunction, but also assessing the overall development, intelligence, language and other aspects of the child’s performance. (3) Emphasize the abnormal developmental characteristics of children with cerebral palsy, i.e., the immaturity and abnormality of brain development, primary injury and secondary disorders; assess not only the defects, but also focus on the child’s existing abilities and potentials. (4) It is important to assess the child in the context of the family situation and the community in which he or she lives, as social and environmental factors play an important role in all aspects of the child’s life. (5) To apply the principle of assessment as a prerequisite, i.e., the rehabilitation of cerebral palsy should be carried out throughout the principle of beginning with assessment and ending with assessment.
