Under normal circumstances, the crystal behind the pupil of our eye is clear, and when it becomes cloudy, it is known as a cataract. Initially, the cloudiness of the lens has little effect on vision, but then it gradually worsens and significantly affects vision or even causes blindness. Cataract is a common eye disease and is one of the major eye diseases that cause blindness. The exact cause of cataracts is still unknown and may be related to age, genetic factors, excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, and certain inflammatory conditions within the eye. Patients with cataracts usually develop in both eyes, but the onset of the disease in both eyes can be sequential and vary in severity. Also, trauma may cause cataracts. In terms of age, cataracts often occur in people over the age of 50, while high myopia and diabetic patients develop cataracts at an earlier age. Cataracts are not yet preventable, and surgery is a clinically proven effective way to treat cataracts.
