Do cataracts have to wait until they mature before surgery?

In the 1960s and 1970s in our country, geriatric cataracts were best operated on when you could not see and the cataract was fully mature. In fact, due to the rapid development of contemporary minimally invasive microscopic cataract technology, the timing of cataract surgery is now much earlier, thus relieving a large number of patients who spent time in the dark and helping them regain their vision and regain their sight early. The best time for cataract surgery is when the lens is completely cloudy. In contrast, modern ultrasound emulsion extraction and laser cataract extraction are currently used. These procedures are operated under a microscope, and technically speaking, it is not a problem to remove the more transparent lens, so there is no need to wait for the cataract to mature before surgery. Especially for patients with double-eyed senile cataract, their vision is obviously reduced and they have difficulties in taking care of themselves. In this case, even if the cataract is not yet mature, surgery should be performed and an IOL should be placed. Therefore, the timing of cataract surgery depends on many factors such as the patient’s visual acuity, the degree of crystal clouding, the general condition and the patient’s work requirements for high or low vision. Of course, cataract surgery carries certain risks and the timing of surgery should not be advanced too much. Currently, most doctors believe that surgery is more appropriate when the corrected visual acuity is below 0.5. In addition, some people think that cataract can be done without surgery, is it not just invisible? In fact, this view is wrong. Because in the process of cataract development, if surgery is not performed in time, serious complications may arise, such as glaucoma and uveitis, etc. These complications occur mostly in the middle and late stages of cataract, which can not only cause blindness, but also sometimes cause serious inflammation in the eye, resulting in atrophy of the eye. Some patients have to have their eyeballs removed because of long-term eye pain, which is unbearable. Therefore, we would like to remind everyone that cataracts should be treated promptly when they are due for surgery.
