How to prevent and treat the side effects of endocrine therapy for prostate cancer

Endocrine therapy is an important part of prostate cancer treatment. Although the side effects of the treatment are less than those of chemotherapy, long-term medication can still cause physical and psychological damage to patients. Here are a few lifestyle suggestions summarized for patients’ reference. Hot flashes: Avoid stimulating foods (hot pot or spicy foods), soy products may help relieve hot flashes. Decreased physical strength: ensure 30 minutes of moderate activity 5 days a week. Osteoporosis: Quit smoking, drink less alcohol, take appropriate amounts of calcium (600-1200 mg) and vitamin D (400-800 IU) daily, and have your bone density checked annually. Cardiovascular diseases: need to check for cardiovascular diseases before treatment, increase fruits and vegetables, reduce salt and saturated fat intake, and check weight and blood pressure regularly. Diabetes and other metabolic diseases: regular check of blood sugar and blood lipids, prevention of “three highs (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high blood lipids)” through diet, activities and lifestyle habits. Kidney insufficiency: Regularly check kidney function and observe urine output. The above suggestions can help to alleviate minor side effects, but for side effects that are difficult to control, it is better to come to the clinic for further examination and treatment.
