Acute nephritis is short for acute glomerulonephritis, so patients with acute nephritis will present with renal oedema. The reason for this is that patients with acute glomerulonephritis will have mild or moderate proteinuria, or in severe cases, even large amounts of proteinuria like in nephrotic syndrome, resulting in water and sodium retention and nephrogenic oedema. The typical presentation is morning oedema of the eyelids and lower limbs.
