The usual method of western medicine to reduce the edema of upper limbs after breast cancer surgery is to use cuff compression to reduce the swelling, but it is easy to be repeated. Dr. Guo Zhizhong from Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine successfully solved this problem by using external application of traditional Chinese medicine together with other therapies. Ms. Zhang from Shandong, who is in her fifties, suffered from breast cancer 6 years ago and had edema in her arm on the operated side after surgery. On the advice of her doctor, she used cuff compression to promote swelling, but the result was very unsatisfactory. When she found me, Ms. Zhang’s arm was swollen like her calf, and the pain was unbearable. In the “Chinese medicine special treatment room” of the first tumor area, I put Chinese ointment on Ms. Zhang’s swollen arm, together with puncture and bloodletting, cupping and oral Chinese medicine. After a few days, the swelling of the arm was obviously reduced. After the symptoms were completely relieved and the treatment was consolidated for another month, Ms. Zhang, who suffered from swelling and pain for more than five years, finally got rid of the pain. The surgical treatment of early stage breast cancer is mainly based on surgical excision. The removal of lymph nodes in the armpit during the surgery cut off the lymphatic flow of the upper limb, resulting in the obstruction of lymphatic flow and the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the arm, which led to swelling and pain in the arm; at the same time, the obstruction of lymphatic flow easily led to the decrease of immunity, local inflammation and fibrosis, which further aggravated the edema in the arm and seriously affected the quality of life. Cuff compression to reduce swelling is effective, but it is easy to repeat. Chinese medicine is very effective in this regard and can help patients reduce swelling after breast cancer surgery. Most breast cancer patients have deficiency of qi and blood and blood stasis blocking the ligaments after surgery, resulting in water stopping and blood stasis in the upper limbs, which leads to swelling and pain. The use of external application of Chinese herbs to tonify qi and blood, remove blood stasis and reduce swelling together with oral administration of Chinese herbs, puncture and bloodletting and cupping has good effect. The specific method of external application is: Gui Zhi 15 grams, Poria 20 grams, Turmeric 20 grams, Fried Atractylodes 15 grams, Angelica 15 grams, Astragalus 30 grams, Safflower 30 grams, Radix Paeoniae 30 grams, Chuan Niu Knee 30 grams, Zedoary 15 grams, Licorice 6 grams. Powder the above medicine, mix it with vinegar and honey to form a burnt form, and apply it externally on the swollen area, after each external application for 24 to 36 hours, rest for 12 hours before the next external application, and then consolidate the treatment for one month after the symptoms are relieved to prevent recurrence.
