Mederi Therapeutics Inc. has announced that the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has issued new clinical guidelines that strongly recommend Stretta therapy for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). randomized controlled studies and long-term follow-up for durability of efficacy. The clinical evidence supporting Stretta was assigned a rating of ++++, the highest appropriate recommendation. “The new Clinical Focus Review for endoluminal GERD therapy strongly supports the safety and efficacy of Stretta as articulated through in-depth analysis of clinical data,” said Scott Melvin, MD, PhD, current SAGES President. A wealth of data clearly demonstrates that Stretta is a valuable minimally invasive approach for the treatment of GERD.” Stretta is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that transmits radiofrequency (RF) energy to reshape the lower esophageal sphincter, providing significant relief from GERD symptoms. In a reference to Stretta, the guideline states, “More than 30 peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of the Stretta procedure, including four adequately powered randomized controlled studies, a comprehensive meta-analysis and multiple prospective clinical trials. Multiple studies have also demonstrated efficacy for at least 48 months, significant reduction or elimination of medications previously used to treat GERD, and improved quality of life and symptom scores for GERD. “Insurers will be looking at this guidance and updating their policy coverage to allow We are very encouraged that Stretta will be available for a wide range of GERD patients.” Will Rutan, CEO of Mederi Therapeutics, said, “It is very gratifying to have such a well-respected organization as SAGES publish a scientific analysis of the substantial clinical evidence supporting Stretta. The ‘strong’ rating indicates that additional studies are no longer needed to confirm Stretta as a safe and effective treatment for GERD.”
