What is diabetes

What is diabetes? Simply put, it is having more than normal levels of glucose in the blood. Currently, venous plasma glucose exceeding 7 mmol/l fasting and 11.1 mmol/l two hours after a meal is generally used as the criteria for diagnosing diabetes. When blood glucose is significantly elevated beyond the kidney’s ability to handle it, osmotic diuresis occurs, excreting excess glucose from the urine, resulting in polyuria. When excessive urine is excreted, the body loses water and thirsty and excessive drinking occurs. When a large amount of glucose is excreted from the urine, the body’s energy supply is insufficient, and it has to eat more to replenish energy, which then appears polyphagia. When the body eventually cannot maintain nutrient balance through its own regulation, wasting occurs, and when further metabolic disorders cannot be compensated, ketosis or even ketoacidosis occurs.
