How do I care for an arteriovenous fistula on a daily basis?

  How do I care for my fistula?  (1) Wash the area daily on the day of dialysis to keep it clean; (2) Plan to change the puncture site during hemodialysis; (3) Wear loose cuffed underwear on the side of the fistula and do not wear tight accessories; (4) Do not compress the side of the fistula while sleeping; (5) Avoid hypotension; ( (6) Avoid taking blood pressure and drawing blood from the fistula limb; (7) Do not put weight on the fistula limb; (8) Learn how to determine if the fistula is patent, i.e. touch the vein on the non-operative side with your hand and feel the tremor; or place the fistula anastomosis site against the opposite ear and hear a vascular murmur, which indicates patency. The fistula is checked for patency every morning and evening.  Fistula exercises such as squeezing and holding a rubber exercise ball with the operated side of the hand 3-4 times a day for 10 minutes each time; also use a hand, tourniquet or blood pressure gauge sleeve over the anastomosis and gently apply pressure until the vein is moderately dilated, releasing it every 15-20 minutes, which can be repeated 3 times a day. Hot compresses or forearm immersion in hot water 2-3 times a day for 15-20 minutes each time. The above methods can be used alone
