Swollen and bleeding gums and smelly teeth are a relatively common, but at the same time complex, clinical condition.
The first step is to identify, exactly, which tissue structure is emitting the odour. If there is a foreign body obstructing the patient’s teeth, the symptom may be caused by decay of the foreign body, inducing a local microbial infection, which usually requires intervention with antibiotics. If the odour is caused by dental calculus, scaling is required. Cleaning with a toothbrush, floss and flosser after regular meals can have a preventive effect.
