How soon can I walk after heel fracture surgery

In general, a comminuted heel fracture undergoing incision and internal fixation can be partially weight-bearing with the support of crutches for six weeks after surgery, but not fully weight-bearing at this time. Three months after surgery, the fracture is clinically healed by x-ray, at which time the crutches can be abandoned and the patient can walk with full weight bearing. Due to the large trauma of the comminuted heel fracture, the damage to the local soft tissues may be serious, therefore, walking on the ground must be prohibited after the surgery, otherwise it may easily cause the stretching of the surgical incision and may result in poor healing of the incision. The healing of the surgical incision must be closely observed after surgery. Non-weight-bearing functional exercises of the foot and ankle can be performed during the first six weeks, which can prevent muscle atrophy and also prevent blood from pooling in the surgical site for a long time.
