Herbal treatment of pyelonephritis

Pyelonephritis can be treated with Chinese herbal tonics based on the main formula with additions and subtractions, such as Bazheng San and Xiao Ji Drinking Zi, depending on the identification of the disease. Pyelonephritis is categorized as “gonorrhea (increased frequency of urination, dripping and astringent pain)” in Chinese medicine. Heat drenching: frequent and short urination, burning heat and red pain, yellowish-red urine, constriction and pain in the abdomen, bitter taste in the mouth, and dryness of stools, etc. The treatment should be to clear away the heat and dampness (to remove the heat and dampness in the body) to clear the drenching, and the Bazheng San is given with additions and subtractions. Hemorrhagic drenching: hot, astringent and stinging pain in urine, dark red urine, or with blood clots, increasing pain in fullness and urgency, heartburn, etc. The treatment should be clearing heat and promoting drenching, cooling blood and stopping hemorrhage (making blood cool and moist, preventing hemorrhage), and Xiao-Ji Drinking Zi is given with additions and subtractions. The adverse effects of the above drugs are not clear.
