What is a biopsy? Is a biopsy a “minor surgery”?

Biopsy is a surgical technique to obtain small pieces of lesion tissue for pathology to obtain preoperative diagnosis. Commonly used biopsies for bone tumors are closed biopsy, incisional biopsy and excisional biopsy. Although the operation of biopsy is not difficult, it is not a minor surgery and needs to be paid great attention by bone tumor surgeons because incorrect biopsy often causes contamination of important local structures such as blood vessels and nerve bundles and prevents complete resection of tumor. Biopsy should follow: (1) Before biopsy, it should be given as much attention as the development of surgical plan and be planned carefully; (2) During biopsy, the principle of aseptic operation should be strictly observed; (3) Make sure that biopsy does not affect the development of later surgical plan and the contaminated area of biopsy should be removed completely; (4) Make sure that there are enough representative tissue specimens for pathologists to make diagnosis; (5) If the doctor or hospital does not have the conditions to diagnose and treat bone and soft tissue tumors, biopsy should be performed before biopsy. (5) If the physician or hospital is not equipped to diagnose and treat bone and soft tissue tumors, the patient should be referred to a physician or hospital equipped to diagnose and treat bone tumors for regular treatment before biopsy.
