What does diffuse thyroid mean?

Diffuse thyroid is a condition in which the thyroid gland is enlarged with localized hyperplastic tissue for various reasons, often with diffuse thyroid inflammation and diffuse goiter. The former is due to local inflammatory infection thus leading to inflammatory hyperplasia and an enlarged thyroid caused by excessive tissue secretion. Patients may have symptoms of itchy throat, cough and sore throat, as well as an exanthematous condition with generalized fever, which requires anti-inflammatory and antibacterial treatment in clinical practice. The latter may be caused by hyperthyroidism or thyroiditis or thyroid tumor, and requires treatment according to the cause. If the enlarged thyroid gland compresses the trachea and esophagus in the back and makes breathing and swallowing difficult, surgical removal is required to relieve the effects of the local enlargement on the patient as much as possible.
