To clarify whether gastric bleeding has occurred, the doctor may ask the patient to perform a fecal occult blood test, which, if positive, suggests the possibility of gastric bleeding. Routine blood tests help the doctor to assess the amount of bleeding, the presence of anaemia, etc. To identify the site and cause of the bleeding, a gastroscopy may be done to visualise the lesions in the stomach. If the patient is not suitable for gastroscopy or if gastroscopy does not reveal the cause of the bleeding, an X-ray barium meal angiogram may be required. If necessary, surgical exploration is required to help clarify the diagnosis and also to treat the patient at the same time.
