There are 380 million children in China, accounting for about 1/4 of China’s population. Family planning is the basic state policy of China, with only one child per couple, fewer and better. Parents want their children to grow up healthy, and preventive care is especially important for groups that are growing and developing rapidly. The easiest and most cost effective way to advance pediatric health care is called pediatric health care tui na.
Pediatric health care tui na is designed and used in accordance with the physiological characteristics of children in the absence of disease, and is a tui na method that helps children’s growth and development and fitness. In the “Treatise on the Origin of Diseases” of the Sui Dynasty, there is a record of Guiding Massage to prevent and treat diseases. Sun Simiao, a famous doctor in the Tang Dynasty, recorded a rich content of child care in the “Prepared Emergency Thousand Gold Essentials”, with a total of 15 entries on the prevention and treatment of pediatric diseases by massage; it was mentioned that “although children are not sick, they often get up in the morning and use cream to massage the fontanelle and the heart of the hands and feet to avoid wind and cold”, which is the earliest written record of the application of massage to prevent and treat pediatric diseases. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, pediatric massage had developed into an independent system, incorporating the holistic view of Chinese medicine, the doctrine of internal organs, the doctrine of yin and yang, and the doctrine of the five elements into the discipline of pediatric massage, laying the theoretical foundation of pediatric health massage, during which pediatric health massage methods were also widely spread among the people.
In recent times, several schools of pediatric massage have their own characteristics in the application of health care massage. The Tui Na San Zi Jing school places academic emphasis on “pure yang”, and its techniques are characterized by the use of clear points, few acupuncture points, unique acupuncture points, and long pushing time, such as pushing the six internal organs to cleanse and regulate the intestines and stomach, and clearing Tian He Shui to regulate the lung health, which has become a characteristic of acupuncture points. Zhang Hanchen’s school of Tui Na attaches importance to diagnosis and emphasizes that children are “young and yin and young and yang”, so he starts with tonifying the kidneys and takes care of the righteousness first. The school of pediatric chiropractic, represented by the famous veteran TCM practitioner Feng Quanfu, proposes the “eight methods of chiropractic” to prevent and treat pediatric diseases. This school has unique insights into paediatric noma, such as regulating the spleen and stomach through chiropractic manipulation, harmonizing the functions of the internal organs, promoting the operation of qi and blood and unblocking the meridians. At present, chiropractic has become one of the common health care techniques for children. Liu Kaiyun, a famous Tui Na expert, founded Liu’s pediatric Tui Na therapy, which is based on the theory of the five elements and the theory of organs and signs, and combines the physiological and pathological characteristics of the five organs of children, with the core content of “pushing the five meridians”. It has become the basis of acupuncture points and techniques for disease prevention and treatment.
From birth to adulthood, children are in the process of continuous growth and development, and are different from adults in terms of form, physiology, and pathology. The younger the child, the more obvious these characteristics become. Mastering these characteristics is extremely important for the health of children and the prevention and treatment of diseases. With the Tui Na health care method, according to the physiology of children and the characteristics of children’s tender skin, loose couples, and weakness of the spirit, we can achieve light and soft, smooth and solid. “Once the clinical evidence, the machine touches on the outside, the skillfulness is born inside, the hand follows the heart and the law comes out from the hand.”
