How to properly recognize a breast lump?

A breast lump is a generalized concept and a very rough diagnosis. When many patients hear about breast lumps, they associate it with breast cancer and wonder if it is an incurable disease. In fact, the problem is far from that simple, and not so terrible, there is no need to panic when you “hear a lump”. Breast lumps are generally divided into two categories: benign and malignant, of which benign tumors account for the majority, and breast cancer accounts for a relatively small proportion. This probability of incidence of the problem, patients should be aware of. If the breast lump is a benign lump (benign tumor), surgical excision is sufficient. If it is a malignant tumor, comprehensive treatment needs to be carried out according to the specific circumstances: if the lump is small, early breast cancer, doctors generally choose surgical treatment, chemotherapy and other comprehensive treatment after surgery; if the lump is large, the effect of immediate surgery is not good, generally have to carry out neoadjuvant chemotherapy, evaluation, and then consider surgical treatment; if it is a very advanced breast cancer, the treatment is more tricky, and chemotherapy is generally chosen according to the specific circumstances, endocrine therapy, etc. With the development of science and technology and the continuous improvement of medical level, even if a breast lump is finally diagnosed as breast cancer, it has a chance to be cured, rather than an incurable disease in the traditional sense; many breast cancer patients treated by us have a survival period of 5 years, 10 years or more. Some patients, once diagnosed with breast cancer, are extremely pessimistic and disappointed, and completely give up treatment, which is an extremely wrong concept. Therefore, several misconceptions must be corrected: 1) Mistakenly believing that a breast lump is cancer; 2) Believing that breast cancer is incurable and that life is coming to an end; 3) Believing that all breast cancers must be treated with surgery immediately, and that other diagnostic and therapeutic measures will cause delays in the condition.
