Proper Decoction of Chinese Medicines

The proper method of decocting Chinese herbs will vary depending on the drug. The general method of decoction is to put the Chinese medicine in a casserole dish, add cool water not exceeding the medicine and then soak it for about 20 minutes. Then turn on the medium heat and start to decoct for 15~20 minutes, then pour out the liquid and add warm water for the second decoction. 1. Take a suitable dose of the herbal medicine and place it in a casserole dish, clay pot or stainless steel vessel. Add potable cool water to soak the medicine, the amount of water should be soaked 1-3 centimeters over the surface of the herbs. Soak for 20-30 minutes. 2. Turn on high heat to bring the liquid to a boil, then turn to low heat to decoct slowly. Cover the pot tightly to avoid volatilization of the ingredients in the medicine. Generally, pour out the liquid after 15~20 minutes of decoction, the time of decoction can be decided according to the type of medicine. 3. Generally, drugs can be divided into two decoctions, the first decoction is called the first decoction. The second decoction can be made by putting warm water in the second decoction, which is called second decoction. Generally speaking, drugs can be decocted at the same time, but some drugs require special decoction methods due to their different textures, such as first decoction, second decoction, packet decoction, etc. It is recommended to make the decoction under doctor’s supervision.
