Effect of hypothyroidism on glomerular filtration rate

Hypothyroidism is generally referred to as hypothyroidism, and patients with hypothyroidism may have a decreased glomerular filtration rate due to decreased renal plasma flow. Hypothyroidism is a group of endocrine disorders resulting from a pathological state of inadequate or absent thyroid hormone action in tissues, i.e., insufficient synthesis, secretion, or biological effects of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism may present with a decreased glomerular filtration rate due to decreased renal blood flow. In addition, a small amount of proteinuria may occur due to thickening of the glomerular basement membrane; impaired renal drainage, with water retention in the tissues; and a range of ion exchange abnormalities, such as hyponatremia and hypomagnesemia. When hypothyroidism is present, prompt consultation and early treatment are recommended to avoid affecting the health of other systems.
