Is shortness natural, or is it a “disease”?

In the past, many parents thought that their children were short because their bodies were not fully developed, but they did not know that short stature is the most common symptom in pediatric endocrinology clinics and is a manifestation of many diseases. For parents, avoiding short stature in children is an issue that needs special attention. For this reason, the reporter interviewed Dr. Qin Zhang to learn about dwarfism. It is not believed that precocious puberty can cause dwarfism Children with precocious puberty have early secretion of a large amount of sex hormones. Although their growth is temporarily accelerated and their height is taller than their peers, due to early sex hormone stimulation, their bone age significantly exceeds their actual age, causing their epiphyses to close early, which eventually leads to dwarfism. However, whether a child with precocious puberty ends up being short depends on the height and bone age at the time of precocious puberty. For example, a girl who has menstruated before the age of 10 is usually 12 years old and 152 cm tall, although her bone age is 2 years older than her actual age, the girl can eventually reach 160 cm in height. As long as the diagnosis of “precocious puberty” is made, it can be controlled by medication. Many parents, after their children are diagnosed with precocious puberty, ask for medication to control their children’s precocious puberty, and they believe that medication can be used regardless of their age and bone age. In fact, these drugs are suitable for children whose bone age is greater than 2 years old, and whose bone age is less than 12 years old for girls and less than 13 years old for boys. For girls who are older than 12.5 years old at the time of menstruation and boys who are older than 13.5 years old after the change of voice, it is not advisable to use drugs to control precocious puberty, because if you continue to use drugs to control precocious puberty, you may not have a second chance to grow. According to Dr. Zhang Qin, the endocrine specialist at the hospital has seen many boys aged 17 to 18 years old who are less than 130 cm, with a bone age of 8 to 9 years old and no male sexual characteristics. The reason for these children’s short stature is the complete lack of growth hormone, which causes the bone age to lag significantly behind the actual age, and without timely treatment, they may eventually stop growing. She has seen several patients in their 30s who were only 120-130 cm in size and had their bone age tested at only 9-10 years old. Dwarfism is a disease that should be paid attention to early. There are two growth spurts in children’s growth process – infancy and adolescence. The whole process is regulated by a variety of factors, and an individual’s final height is influenced by genetics, birth height, nutrition, hormones, environment, and disease. Among the many factors, growth hormone plays a decisive role in the whole growth process. The younger the child is, the better the effect of height increase. Experts suggest that the best age to start treatment for children with short stature is from 5 years old to early adolescence, and the lighter the child is, the smaller the dose of medication and the smaller the cost spent. Even if the child is treated with height-enhancing drugs at a later stage of development, such as when the girl’s bone age is greater than 15 years old and the boy’s bone age is greater than 16 years old, the improvement in height will not be obvious. Dr. Zhang Qin said that regardless of the type of short stature, one must first go to a pediatric endocrinology specialist at a regular hospital to clarify the cause and treat the cause. Of course, treatment is generally not advocated for children and parents who do not mind their height, while those who are obviously troubled by short stature should be given medication or psychotherapy.
