Cataracts can have sequelae/complications if left untreated

Although cataracts, a common eye disease in the elderly, have long been seen, surgery on such a delicate organ as the eye has caused many seniors to be apprehensive. Although experts have repeatedly stated that the only way to treat cataracts is surgery. It is not that they do not know that drugs cannot treat cataracts, but they still lack knowledge about surgery. Cataract surgery is a very mature surgical procedure and the principle of surgery is very simple because cataracts are caused by clouding of the lens. Since the technology of cataract surgery is very stable, with experienced surgeons and highly sophisticated surgical equipment, modern cataract surgery will hardly cause any sequelae/complications as long as the surgery is performed at the right time. On the contrary, delayed and untreated cataracts can cause secondary glaucoma and other ophthalmic complications due to the swelling produced by the clouding and degeneration of the crystal over a long period of time, resulting in changes in the structure of the eye. Cataract surgery alone is very simple, but if patients keep avoiding cataract surgery because of fear of surgery, it can lead to serious consequences, while glaucoma treatment is not as simple as cataract, and glaucoma requires long-term follow-up to prevent recurrence of the eye disease even if it is cured. Therefore, if a cataract is diagnosed and the doctor recommends surgery, surgery should be performed as soon as possible.
