Glaucoma is a thief that steals your vision

The eyes are the windows to the human soul, and 90% of the information the human brain obtains comes from vision.
Glaucoma causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve. Early detection and regular treatment can effectively slow down the progress of the disease, so that you can preserve your useful vision and enjoy the colorful world and life in your lifetime!
Glaucoma is a thief that steals your eyesight. With the development of modern medicine, glaucoma doctors with advanced treatment methods are armed to help you defend yourself against the thief, so all you need is your trust and cooperation!
  How to detect glaucoma?
If you experience any of the following discomforts, please seek prompt medical attention.
  1. Eye swelling, headache, photophobia and tearing, iridescence, vision loss and other discomforts.
2, Some patients do not have symptoms such as eye swelling and headache, only gradual vision loss.
3.Adolescents and young adults show faster myopia deepening.
4, high intraocular pressure, large fluctuations in intraocular pressure within 24 hours (more than 8 mmHg).
5, visual field defects, optic nerve damage
What should patients with high intraocular pressure do?
The normal IOP is 10-21mmHg, if the IOP is higher than this value, it is called high IOP, some patients with high IOP are born with high IOP, and some patients are pre-expression of glaucoma, so the change of IOP and damage of optic nerve should be followed closely, once the damage of optic nerve is found, treatment should be carried out immediately, the purpose is to reduce the chance of blindness and protect the lifetime blindness. If follow-up is neglected, irreversible optic nerve damage and permanent loss of vision may result.
  Understanding closed-angle glaucoma
Closed-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma in the elderly, and there are mainly acute and chronic forms.
  1. Acute closed-angle glaucoma: The main clinical manifestations are sudden onset of obvious eye pain, headache, and even nausea and vomiting, with a high degree of visual acuity loss, accompanied by eye redness and eye swelling symptoms. If the IOP can be controlled in time during acute attack, the vision can be gradually restored and the visual field can be kept normal, but if it is not controlled in time, the IOP level is too high, it can lead to blindness in a short time or even in a few days, so acute angle-closure glaucoma attack is one of the ophthalmic emergencies. Some patients may be misdiagnosed as neurological and digestive diseases because of headache or vomiting.
2, chronic closed-angle glaucoma: clinically there is no corresponding symptoms of rapid increase in intraocular pressure, the level of intraocular pressure rises gradually, the patient is often not easy to detect. The progressive damage to the optic nerve and visual field is often detected when the disease has reached an advanced stage or during routine eye examinations, and is therefore more potentially harmful.
  Understanding open-angle glaucoma
Glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma in young adults and patients with high intraocular pressure. It is almost asymptomatic in the early stages and only when the lesion progresses to a more advanced stage do patients experience blurred vision, eye swelling and headache. In most cases, good central vision can be maintained even in advanced tubular vision.
  Is glaucoma curable?
Generally speaking, glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be managed. Once diagnosed, lifelong treatment is required to prevent vision damage. Current glaucoma ophthalmic fluid spot treatment and microsurgical treatment are quite successful in controlling eye pressure in the long term.
Many people believe that glaucoma is cured when high intraocular pressure is controlled to a safe level through medication or surgery. In fact, IOP fluctuates greatly within 24 hours in glaucoma patients, and one IOP measurement is not representative of a day’s IOP. If IOP fluctuates more than 8 mmHg within 24 hours, it can also damage the optic nerve and vision, so postoperative follow-up visits to understand changes in the optic nerve are essential.
  Principles of glaucoma treatment
The goal of current glaucoma treatment is to stop the progression of glaucoma as much as possible. The goal of both drug and surgical treatment is to control intraocular pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve, so that patients can maintain useful vision for life, rather than to “cure” glaucoma or “remove” glaucoma. Glaucoma is not “cured” or “removed”.
1, drug treatment if local drops of 1~2 drugs can make the IOP control at a safe level, visual field and fundus changes no longer progress, the patient can cooperate with regular review, then you can choose long-term drug treatment.
Laser treatment includes laser iridotomy, argon laser trabeculoplasty, and selective trabeculoplasty, which can delay surgical treatment and reduce the use of anti-glaucoma drugs, often requiring repeated treatment, and cannot replace surgical treatment.
3, surgery to lower IOP treatment commonly used surgical procedures are filtration surgery including trabeculectomy, non-penetrating trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage valve implantation, etc. The advantage of surgery is to control IOP smoothly, which can greatly reduce the dose and number of drugs used by patients and reduce the toxic reaction of drugs to the eye. Currently, glaucoma filtration surgery has a high success rate with the improvement of surgical methods.
Once glaucoma is diagnosed, patients need long-term review and treatment, early detection and active treatment to effectively control the development of glaucoma and avoid progressive damage to visual function.
