Nerve anastomosis is a microsurgical procedure in which the surgeon surgically anastomoses the affected facial nerve with other motor nerves under a microscope. The goal is to restore the static contour of the face and reestablish a natural smile on the side of facial palsy. The occlusal nerve anastomosis is currently the most commonly used and preferred surgical option. The surgeon’s first choice is to accurately locate the paralyzed facial nerve and the nearby occlusal nerve. With the help of a nerve stimulator, a portion of the occlusal nerve bundle (not all of the occlusal nerve) is selected for surgical anastomosis with the facial nerve trunk. The occlusal nerve anastomosis was performed in patients with complete and incomplete facial palsy, and all achieved a very good static expression with an almost symmetrical smile, with only a mild asymmetry in the nasolabial folds. The hand diagram is as follows: Patients are routinely concerned about several questions. 1. Will I have severe atrophy of the occlusal muscle after the occlusal nerve anastomosis? A: Severe atrophy will not occur. The surgery only separated part of the occlusal nerve, so atrophy of the occlusal muscle is less likely to occur. After surgery, through functional exercise, there is usually no significant change in appearance. 2.Will I be unable to bite if I have an occlusal nerve anastomosis? A: No. There are four muscles involved in the occlusal function, and after the occlusal nerve anastomosis, most of the functions of the occlusal muscles still exist, so there is little effect on the occlusal function. 3.Will facial movement be restored immediately after the occlusal nerve anastomosis? A: No. Generally, 3 months after the nerve anastomosis, facial movement can be observed. Thereafter, after systematic facial muscle rehabilitation exercises, facial movement will reach a stable state about 1 year after the surgery. 4.How many days do I need to stay in hospital? A: This surgery is very traumatic, and you can be discharged from the hospital 3-5 days after the surgery, and the stitches can be removed in the outpatient clinic 7 days after the surgery.
