  In addition to liver function abnormalities, chronic hepatitis B and post-hepatitis B cirrhosis, the more serious outcome is hepatocellular malignancy and development of hepatocellular carcinoma. If the value of alpha fetoprotein is significantly elevated, it is a sensitive and specific indicator for detecting liver cancer. If the value of alpha fetoprotein does not decrease continuously or is progressively elevated, the possibility of liver cancer should be highly suspected.
