Before I first met Serenity, I had heard about this child, who was a love baby sent by the Caring Mother Foundation. Although Serenity’s mother and father, as farmers in Anhui Province, do not have much savings for their child’s treatment, but this does not diminish the love for their daughter, they work hard to earn money, looking for relatives to borrow money, although trying to do everything possible, but tens of thousands of yuan of treatment costs are still like astronomical figures for the parents who love their daughter, when the Mother of Love Foundation handed over Serenity’s treatment costs to them, the simple farmer couple could not express their gratitude to The simple farmer couple could not express their gratitude to the loving mother, but only said, “We will definitely pay back the money of these good people, we will definitely pay back.” Zhang Junping of the Neuro-Oncology Chemotherapy Center of Sanbo Brain Hospital of Capital Medical University I saw little Serenity sleeping in the ward, her young body looked peaceful and beautiful under the white sheet, and she was recovering well after the surgery. When I looked at this beautiful child, I could not help touching her still pale and tender face, and thought of the pathology result in my hand: medulloblastoma. I couldn’t help but complain about the cruelty of fate, how could it be so cruel to let a child who is so ignorant endure such a disease? Medulloblastoma originates from the remnants of embryonic cells, one of which is the remnants of cells in the outer granular layer during the development of the cerebellum, and the other is the abnormal cells in the germinal zone of the posterior medullary sails of the cerebellum. The cell morphology of medulloblastoma resembles that of embryonic medulloblast cells, hence the name. Medulloblastoma mainly occurs in children under 14 years of age, but a few are seen in those over 20 years of age and rare in those over 50 years of age; it is more common in males than females and accounts for 15-21% of intracranial tumors in children. The prognosis of medulloblastoma is not good. International statistics show that the survival rate of children with medulloblastoma is 50-80% at 5 years and 20-40% at 10 years after surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and the younger the age, the worse the prognosis. For medulloblastoma, the survival period of those with surgery and radiation therapy combined with chemotherapy is significantly longer than those with surgery and radiation therapy alone, and medulloblastoma is more sensitive to chemotherapy, so the combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy is especially important. On April 14, 2008, little Serenity had a posterior approach to the left sigmoid sinus for cerebellar and quadrigeminal tumor resection. Her twin brother has been taken care of by her elderly grandmother at home during her chemotherapy treatment, her mother is working as a nanny, and her father is also working as a casual worker. After two cycles of chemotherapy, little Serenity is getting better day by day, eating well, gaining some weight and being very lively. A repeat MRI did not show any tumor recurrence. After two more cycles of chemotherapy, the MRI was routinely repeated and revealed: multiple implantation metastases in the skull and spinal canal. Looking at the results and turning to the parents who were waiting for the results with trepidation, I didn’t know how to tell them the conclusion of tumor dissemination. Serenity’s father is a very smart man, he saw the doctor’s difficulty and said with a strong sense of composure: “It’s okay, we’ll listen to you, we’ll continue with the medication as you say. After I carefully studied Little Serenity’s condition, I decided to change the chemotherapy regimen. After the new chemotherapy regimen was applied for 2 cycles, we all looked forward to the MRI results. The MRI results showed that all the tumor lesions in the skull and spinal canal had disappeared, and the chemotherapy was very effective! We found out that when Serenity came to the hospital, her mom and dad brought a backpack full of steamed buns and pickled vegetables, and when asked, we learned that Beijing steamed buns were too expensive for them, so they steamed them from home to save every penny. But Mama and Papa Serenity never complained about the injustice of fate, let alone frowned, they simply just faced all the difficulties as if it was all natural. We don’t know what supported these parents who only ate steamed buns and pickles for a long time, and we don’t know what strength made them persevere and never give up. Finally, after a full year of chemotherapy, Serenity’s last MRI result was very satisfactory: no tumor was seen. It was as if they had won a difficult and long-lasting battle, and everyone was relieved. Sometimes fate can be turned around. However, six months after the chemotherapy was finished, Serenity’s father called and said that the child’s local review had revealed a recurrence of the tumor, which was a bolt from the blue for everyone who was concerned about Serenity. After reviewing the films, I and the director of the imaging department, Zhu Mingwang, and other experts determined that the strip-shaped enhancement shadow seen on the MRI of Xiaoqian was the venous sinus and not a tumor recurrence. My heart was fluctuating with the ups and downs. I wish: all children in the world will grow up healthy.
