Spinal Deformities FAQ

What are the conditions of scoliosis? There are more than a dozen diagnoses of scoliosis, including idiopathic, congenital, neurogenic, myogenic, connective tissue disease and neurofibromatosis, to name a few. The most common are congenital scoliosis and idiopathic scoliosis in children, idiopathic scoliosis in adolescents, and spinal deformities due to degeneration in adults. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of spinal deformity, accounting for about 2% to 3% of patients with more than 10° in the general population, about 5 per cent of patients with more than 20° who require bracing, and about 1 per cent of patients with more than 40° who may require surgery.
