Amniocentesis is recommended for pregnancies at 37 years of age, and the doctor needs to be fully informed of the risks involved. Pregnancy at the age of 37 is an advanced maternal age, which increases the risk of chromosomal disorders and structural abnormalities in the fetus. Therefore, it is recommended that prenatal diagnostic methods, such as amniocentesis, must be performed in advanced maternal age to definitively rule out the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. However, some pregnant women <40 years of age will make an informed choice of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) after being fully informed of the risks. For pregnant women of advanced age who undergo NIPT screening, a low-risk result does not mean that the fetus is developing normally, and ultrasonography of the fetal structural system should be performed at 20 to 24 weeks of gestation, with strict follow-up labor and delivery tests. However, a high-risk result can only indicate an increased risk of chromosomal disorders in the fetus, which requires prenatal counseling and prenatal diagnosis as prescribed by the doctor.
