Tear film rupture time refers to the time interval between blinking and keeping the eye open and the appearance of the 1st dry spot on the tear film surface, which is an objective test to evaluate the stability of the tear film, and its less than 10s indicates that the tear film is unstable. Tear film rupture time is mainly used for the examination and confirmation of dry eye disease, if it is less than 10s, the tear film is unstable, indicating insufficient oil secretion on the eye surface, which is common in dry eye disease. The results of tear film rupture time examination are affected by age, race, lid size, temperature, humidity, etc. Patients should combine other tests to make a comprehensive determination of the presence of dry eye, such as tear secretion test, tear osmolarity measurement, corneal fluorescein staining and width measurement, and conjunctival blot cytology to confirm the diagnosis. Once a patient is diagnosed with dry eye, he or she should start using artificial tear drops as soon as possible. It is recommended to use the preservative-free type of artificial tear drops, which are not limited in time of use and can be considered for long-term use. Patients should also be aware of the need for regular review.
