Causes and treatment of dry eye disease

Dry eye is not a problem that can be solved simply by using artificial tears, artificial tears are only the “symptoms” of treating a part of the person, but the “root” of the disease must be treated. I hope this will be helpful to patients and some doctors in their diagnosis and treatment. Dry eye is a general term for a variety of diseases caused by any of the following: 1) tear quality; 2) abnormal tear volume; 3) abnormal tear dynamics, resulting in a decrease in tear film stability and associated with ocular discomfort and/or ocular surface histopathology, often manifested as “ocular dryness and foreign body sensation”, but also other symptoms: burning sensation, itchiness, photophobia, redness, pain, visual acuity, and other symptoms. It can also be other symptoms: burning sensation, itching, photophobia, redness and pain, blurred vision and fatigue, and mucous filamentous discharge. Since dry eye has many causes and is an umbrella term for many diseases, doctors should take a careful history, find the cause, and make a diagnosis and treatment based on the cause, not simply using artificial tears.
