”Dry eye” is a general term for any condition that causes abnormal tear quality or quantity or kinetics, resulting in a decrease in tear film stability and associated eye discomfort. Insufficient quantity of tears: In normal people, the rate of tear secretion per eye is: 1μL/min. Insufficient secretion or excessive evaporation can cause a deficiency in the number of tears. Poor quality of tears: normal tears form a tear film on the surface of the eye, and the tear film is divided into three layers from outside to inside: lipid layer, water layer, and mucin layer, and the quality of tears will be reduced by abnormalities in any layer. Classification of dry eye: 1, divided into four categories: aqueous layer tear gland tear secretion is insufficient; lipid layer secretion is insufficient; mucin layer secretion is insufficient; excessive tear evaporation tear film distribution is not uniform. 2, divided into two categories: tear production part of the insufficient type; evaporation of excessive type. Clinical symptoms: Common symptoms include dry eyes, fatigue, drowsiness, foreign body sensation, burning sensation, tight and heavy eyelids, sticky secretions, photophobia, sensitivity to external stimuli, temporary blurred vision; sometimes the eyes are too dry, the basic tear deficiency instead stimulates reflex tear secretion and causes increased tearing; more serious eyes will be red, swollen, congested, keratinized, corneal epithelial damage and filamentous adhesions, the long-term Long-term damage will cause keratoconjunctival lesions, and will affect vision. Treatment and prevention: 1, for the cause of prevention: the causes of corneal conjunctival dryness in life: due to prolonged computer operation, any work in front of the monitor screen, car driving driver occupation, reading and other fine work, the number of transient eyes reduced, causing a decrease in tears. Reduced tear quality due to contact lenses, post-myopia laser surgery (so patients with dry eye themselves are not suitable for laser myopia surgery), allergic conjunctivitis, atmospheric pollution, ultraviolet light and other causes. Evaporation of tears due to large eye fissures, or dryness of the room they are in. The use of some antihypertensive drugs and some psychostimulants have an effect on tear production. The quality of tears decreases due to physiological reasons such as advanced age, lack of sleep and mental stress. 2, prevention: blink more, blink is a protective neurological reflex action, once the number of blinks is reduced, directly resulting in a decrease in the amount of tears, and the tear film exposed to the air will evaporate quickly, losing the protective power of the eye. When operating a computer, driving, or reading for long periods of time, remind yourself not to concentrate too much and take some time to blink. Most people generally blink once every five seconds, about 20 times per minute. Pay attention to eye hygiene, wash your hands regularly, don’t rub your eyes with your hands, and take a break from using your eyes for an hour or so, close your eyes and look into the distance. People who work with computers for a long time, especially young people, should pay attention to timely treatment of dry eye symptoms, reduce the time spent using computers, and avoid using computers continuously for a long time. Pay attention to diet, eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, and increase the intake of vitamin A, B1, C and E. Wear frame glasses, long time wearing contact lenses will reduce tear secretion, so people who wear contact lenses will always feel dry eyes, wear glasses on windy days, also wear goggles when swimming, wear sunglasses when going out. Use air conditioning as little as possible and stay in rooms with low humidity. Treating lid gland dysfunction Do eyelid cleansing and hot compresses. Do lid massage: have medical staff massage along the direction of lid drainage to push out those secretions that cannot be drained even with hot compresses. If you feel it is working, you can do it once a week for a month. You can also massage yourself with a hot compress 3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes, and then massage the lid glands of the eyelids with your hands. Often patients with dry eyes also have MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction), where the Meibomian glands secrete less or no lid fat, so massage, along with some antibiotic eye ointment applied to the lid margin, the root of the eyelashes, or short-term application of hormonal antibiotic eye ointment, can be helpful. Also, consider wearing wet room goggles (a type of eye similar in appearance to swimming goggles, with the disadvantage of being bulky, affecting the appearance and compressing the bridge of the nose). If it does not work, you can consider, tear duct embolization, SmartPlug tear duct embolization (belong to the collagen embolization, generally about six months will be absorbed), while in conjunction with the application of dry eye preparations, once the implantation of tear duct embolization after, do not flush the tear duct, to prevent the embolization will be washed away.
