Oral cancer has a high incidence in Asia, which is related to smoking, alcohol consumption, dietary habits, HPV infection and other factors. In clinical practice, we often encounter many patients who have lost the chance to cure oral cancer that could have been cured due to improper treatment. In addition, the existence of both head and neck oncology surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery in China has caused some confusion for patients to choose which specialty to seek medical treatment. In this article, we would like to briefly discuss the reasonable treatment of oral cancer, hoping to provide patients with a knowledge popularization and medical reference. 1. The treatment of oral cancer should be mainly surgical resection. Early, intermediate and some advanced patients should choose radical surgery for the first treatment, and the chance of curing the disease will be greatly increased if other treatments are combined on this basis. 2. Surgery for oral cancer is usually very large and will affect important functions such as chewing, swallowing, speech and aesthetics. This is where reconstructive surgery usually needs to be done in conjunction with radical resection. It is this factor that limits the treatment of many patients, because repair and reconstruction surgery is usually complicated and requires microsurgery and plastic surgery skills, which not all hospitals have. As a result, many patients who need surgery do not undergo radical resection for fear of postoperative function, and choose only chemotherapy or radiotherapy for the first treatment, resulting in a disease that could be simply cured not only costing much more but also not being cured. Therefore, the surgical treatment of oral cancer is usually more complicated and requires more specialized doctors and techniques to get good treatment results. 3. Treatment of advanced oral cancer should be a combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Induction chemotherapy plus surgery, concurrent radiotherapy, sequential therapy and targeted therapy are all treatment modalities under different circumstances. Each case is different, so you should discuss with your doctor carefully to choose the best plan.
