How often do gout attacks occur?

The frequency of gout attacks varies from patient to patient and is mainly related to the patient’s uric acid level and whether or not gout triggers occur frequently. Some patients may have 2-3 attacks a year, while others may have more than 10 attacks a year, while some patients may not have a gout attack for 2-3 years after adjusting their lifestyles and taking care of them. Triggers that affect gout attacks include sudden strenuous exercise, sudden exposure to cold, as well as heavy drinking, overeating, or consumption of more purine-rich foods, such as seafood with shellfish, meat soup, hot pot, etc. On top of hyperuricemia, if the patient has frequent occurrence of the above triggering factors, it can lead to frequent attacks of gout. In order to avoid this, patients should try to avoid triggering factors, and in addition, they need to control their blood uric acid to meet the standard, which is generally required to be below 360μmol/L.
