Free and smooth breathing for children with asthma

“The strategy for treating asthma is that highly skilled physicians keep patients from having attacks, while imbecile physicians are the ones who give treatment only when patients have attacks. Through standardized combined medication treatment, asthma can be completely controlled and reach the goal of clinical cure ……” — Ma Chunyan, Department of Pediatrics, Zhong Nanshan Baogang Hospital In the eyes of many patients and even doctors In the eyes of many patients and even physicians, complete control of asthma is a pipe dream, and because of the deep-rooted view mentioned above, many asthma patients do not actively pursue formal treatment and only think of their doctors when they have an attack. However, a survey of asthma patients in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Zhejiang in the Asia-Pacific Asthma Status Study showed that in a year, 33% of patients had to see an emergency room, 15% had been hospitalized, and 27% had disrupted sleep at least once a week.    International studies have confirmed that asthma can be controlled. In 1993, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the World Health Organization (WHO) cooperated to implement the Global INitiative for Asthma (GINA), which is currently the most scientific and rational treatment protocol for asthma control worldwide. Since 1994, GINA has been promoted worldwide and has been updated by expert groups in 2002 and every year since then. The GOAL (Gaining Optimal Asthma Control) study, led by Professor Eric Bateman and a number of leading experts in the field, began in 2001 in 44 countries and 326 research centers worldwide, including China. In China, Professor Nanshan Zhong led the study as team leader for eight hospitals in China. In October 2004, the team announced that with regular treatment, including appropriate doses of inhaled hormones, all signs of asthma disappeared, achieving what the researchers defined as “complete control” of asthma – There are no daytime asthma symptoms, no nighttime awakenings, no acute attacks, no emergency room visits, no emergency asthma medications, no treatment-related adverse effects, and normal lung function, meaning that people with asthma are free to live their lives as healthy people.    The incidence of childhood asthma has been on the rise in recent years, and a weekend in late August 2012 saw a concentrated acute asthma attack in the Baotou area, highlighting the urgent need for public knowledge of asthma prevention and control. Many people’s knowledge of asthma is extremely shallow, with a significant proportion of asthma sufferers not even realizing they have asthma, and the vast majority of asthma sufferers simply not receiving standardized treatment. The implementation of the GINA program is not only the work of doctors, but also a long-term process that requires the joint efforts of doctors, patients and their families. . The Department of Pediatrics of our hospital implements a standardized and integrated treatment process of assessment, treatment and monitoring for children in accordance with GINA with the main goal of “asthma control”, and has been promoting asthma knowledge to children with asthma and their parents for more than ten years. Every year, we hold asthma education and medical consultation activities on International Asthma Day to explain to patients and their families about the nature of asthma, the simple pathogenesis, asthma medication and self-management, and other knowledge related to asthma treatment. In order to better meet the health needs of the public and to promote the standardized treatment of asthma, the “Happy Children’s Asthma Home” was officially established in August 2012 to send some scientific knowledge about asthma prevention and treatment to patients and their families in conjunction with the SMS platform of our hospital, and to regularly carry out health education on children’s asthma as a good way to promote GINA in the public. This is a good form of GINA, which is conducive to building harmony between doctors and patients, reflecting the public welfare of public hospitals and generating great social benefits.    The “Happy Children’s Asthma Home” helps parents understand the general knowledge of asthma disease, master the correct methods of first aid, medication and medical treatment for their children, and learn the standardized asthma treatment techniques, and bridge the communication between children, parents and doctors. With “successful asthma control” as the ultimate core goal, we work together to help children with asthma get rid of the dangerous situation of acute attacks, so that children with asthma can enjoy free and smooth breathing and a healthy and happy childhood like all children.
