Perimenopause – how to get through it safely

Ms. Wang was 50 years old, with a happy family and a good job, but recently she was always frowning. It turns out that since she began to irregular menstruation a year ago, it is obvious that she feels a decline in physical fitness, often feel back pain, fatigue and irritability, often dreamy and easy to wake up at night, hot flashes and sweating. She was always optimistic and outgoing, but suddenly she seemed to be a different person. With anxiety, she came to our gynecology endocrinology clinic for treatment. A month later, her smile was back on her face …… In fact, what she was going through was a stage that many women of her age are going through or have gone through —— perimenopause. What is perimenopause? It is the period when a woman moves from a period of high fertility to a period of decline, commonly known as “menopause”. After 30-40 years of menstruation, a woman’s ovarian function begins to decline and the pituitary gland becomes hyperactive, secreting too much gonadotropin and causing disorders of the plant nervous system, resulting in a series of symptoms of varying degrees. When women enter the perimenopause, most of them show menstrual disorders. In addition, because the vasodilator function becomes unstable, symptoms such as paroxysmal hot flashes, redness, sweating, etc.; and because of the reduction of estrogen during perimenopause: atrophy of reproductive organs, low vaginal discharge, local dryness, discomfort during sexual intercourse, and osteoporosis symptoms such as soreness of the back, limbs and joints, as well as dyslipidemia, hypertension, coronary heart disease and other diseases. The chances of malignant tumors occurring in perimenopausal women increase, and the common ones are cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, etc. The mental and psychological changes involved are emotional instability, irritability and suspiciousness, and significant recent memory loss. Currently, China accounts for about 1/5 of the world’s population and is the world’s most populous country. This basic national condition determines that China is the country with the largest number of elderly people in the world. With the improvement of living standards in China, the rapid growth of life expectancy of the population foretells that more and more Chinese women will face perimenopause. Although many women now know that menopausal symptoms and menstrual disorders are caused by “menopause”, they seldom know that osteoporosis, heart disease, dementia and diabetes in old age are also caused or aggravated by the decrease of estrogen. So how can we face and solve these problems to enjoy a healthy and happy perimenopause? How to properly understand the hormone therapy during perimenopause? How to prevent and treat osteoporosis? What are the confusions and misconceptions about perimenopause? In order to answer the above questions, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital intends to hold a lecture on “How to Survive Perimenopause ——” at 9:00 a.m. on May 7, 2011 at the Fetal University on the seventh floor of the Outpatient Building to answer your questions and solve your problems, and work with you to go through this difficult and important stage in your life. We hope all perimenopausal women and their relatives will come and actively participate.
