Recognizing the hammertoe

High-heeled shoes, for women is undoubtedly a kind of jewelry that makes them happy and can not bear to give up. High-heeled shoes can set off their long legs, so that it looks light and slender; but often wear high-heeled shoes of the beauty, but the “beauty”, but the pain on the feet has never stopped. Frequently wear high heels can lead to foot, neck, lumbar spine chronic diseases, affecting physical health. Let’s recognize one of the more common toe deformities – hammertoe. Hammertoe, in the literal sense of the word, is like a toe that looks like a hammer. Hammertoe generally refers to the toe proximal interphalangeal joint flexion contracture, metatarsophalangeal joints to maintain hyperextension, and sometimes accompanied by dislocation, distal interphalangeal joints neutral or dorsal extension of a deformity (Figure 1); in addition to the bunion of the rest of the 4 toes, most often in the second toe, can be involved in the toe of three joints, namely, metatarsophalangeal joints, proximal interphalangeal joints, distal interphalangeal joints. The main symptoms of most patients are swelling, pain and instability of the metatarsophalangeal joints, the pain can be on the back of the toes or at the end of the toe abdomen, often forming “corns”. If accompanied by diabetes mellitus, plantar sensory impairment, can lead to foot ulcers, infections that do not heal, and in severe cases, need to amputate or even amputate the limbs. How does hammertoe happen? The causes of hammertoe include mechanical and inflammatory factors, of which mechanical factors are mainly related to the type of shoes worn, so the incidence of hammertoe in women is higher than that in men, the ratio of male to female is 1:5. Long-term wearing of pointed high heels can make the metatarsophalangeal joints hyperextend, resulting in the “flexion effect” to the hammertoe deformity. Inflammatory factors are known to be mainly related to synovitis of the metatarsophalangeal joints of the second toe. There are three degrees of deformity: mild deformity, in which there is no rigid contracture of the metatarsophalangeal joint or the proximal interphalangeal joint; moderate deformity, in which there is a rigid plantar flexion contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint without dorsiflexion contracture of the metatarsophalangeal joint; and severe deformity, in which there is a rigid contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint with a contracture of the metatarsophalangeal joint with dorsiflexion. From the above, it can be seen that the hammertoe part can be prevented, for students, when choosing shoes, appropriate loose shoes, avoid high heels. For professional women, high heels are needed because they can increase the appearance height and make the wearer to lift the chest and close the abdomen to make the human body curve more beautiful. If it is necessary to wear high heels for social, ceremonial, performance and other specific occasions, it is also necessary to replace them in time, such as back home, in the office more time to operate the computer and other work can be changed to lightweight, casual and some; before going to bed with warm water to soak your feet, do waist and back gymnastics, massage the feet and waist and back, in order to reduce the side effects caused by wearing high-heeled shoes. If the symptoms of hammertoe affect the quality of life, you need to go to the hospital under the guidance of a doctor.
