Peripheral facial palsy, also known as facial nerve palsy or facial neuritis, is a common clinical condition with a high incidence in winter and spring every year. It is caused by cold wind attack on the facial nerve or virus infection, resulting in ischemia and edema of the facial nerve in the mastoid foramen and different degrees of degeneration of the myelin sheath or axon, which leads to stiffness of one side of the facial muscles, incomplete eyelid closure, lacrimation, crooked corners of the mouth, cheek puffing and air leakage, shallow nasolabial fold, ear pain, tongue taste sensation, etc. The degree of damage to the facial nerve depends on the stem papillae. The degree of facial nerve damage depends on the degree and duration of acute inflammatory edema in the mastoid foramen. The longer the edema, the more severe it is, and the longer the facial nerve is compressed, the more likely the facial nerve is to degenerate and difficult to recover. Clinical upper nerve palsy is divided into three periods: the acute period from 1 to 7 days after onset, the quiescent period from 8 to 15 days after onset, and the recovery period from 15 days or more after onset. According to Chinese medicine, the disease is mainly caused by the weakness of positive qi, wind and evil entering the facial meridians, poor qi and blood circulation, phlegm blocking the ligaments, and longitudinal and slow closing of the facial tendons and muscles. Acupuncture treatment for peripheral facial palsy can promote blood and lymph circulation, improve the nutritional status of locally damaged facial nerves and facial muscles, increase the contraction of muscle fibers, enable the absorption of inflammatory exudates, reduce the damage to nerves, control the development of facial nerve inflammation, and thus achieve the effects of opening the meridians, harmonizing qi and blood, dispelling wind and removing dampness, resolving phlegm and removing silt, and rehabilitating the patient’s face. Acupuncture treatment for facial palsy should be started from the early stage (acute phase), which can promote the absorption of nerve edema as soon as possible and reduce or eliminate the occurrence of sequelae. However, it should be noted that during the acute period, fewer acupuncture points should be taken on the face, the acupuncture technique should be light and shallow, and electro-acupuncture should not be used; infrared irradiation, moxibustion therapy, Chinese medicine and western medicine can be used to reduce edema, expand blood vessels and nourish nerves; after entering the quiescent and recovery period, electro-acupuncture and plum blossom acupuncture can be given, and for patients who are stubborn and difficult to heal, acupuncture and bloodletting and cupping therapy can be added to help recover as soon as possible. Patients with facial neuritis should avoid wind and cold when they go out, they can massage and apply heat to the affected side on their own, they should not eat cold, spicy stimulating and greasy food, they should eat more fresh vegetables, coarse and fine grains with a light, easy to digest diet. Acupuncture treatment for facial neuritis is the traditional specialty of the acupuncture room of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has accumulated rich clinical experience, with a cure rate of over 90%, a short course of treatment, less pain, and less cost, and is the best treatment option for patients with facial paralysis.
