Do newborns get acne too?

When we sometimes encounter neonatal acne in the clinic and diagnose it as acne, many parents will have questions: Do neonates get acne too? Yes, neonatal acne is a common skin condition that occurs mostly during the neonatal period or within 4 weeks of birth. It is more common in boys and presents as a temporary papule or pustule on the face that often lasts for several weeks. The cause of skin lesions in newborns is due to high levels of androgens in the mother’s body, which enter the baby’s body through the placenta. Androgens promote sebaceous gland hypertrophy and secretion, resulting in the temporary appearance of acne. Since this androgen is imported by the mother and is not produced autologously, acne naturally clears up when the androgen level in the baby’s body gradually drops to normal.
