Is it normal to have a bowel movement three or four times a day?

Generally speaking, 1-2 bowel movements a day is most beneficial to health, and whether 3-4 bowel movements a day is normal is related to each individual’s specific situation. Stool is composed of food residues not digested and absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, substances secreted by the gastrointestinal tract, and shed cells, etc. Due to differences in diet, physique, and living environment, the timing, volume, and number of bowel movements differ for each person. In the case of 3-4 bowel movements a day, it is normal if there is no significant increase in the amount of stool and if the stool is not abnormal in nature. If the volume of stool is higher than before, but the stool is not abnormal in nature, it may be due to the consumption of more dietary fiber-rich foods. If the stool is thin or even watery, it is more likely to be caused by acute gastroenteritis or irritable bowel syndrome. If the condition of 3-4 bowel movements per day lasts for 3 weeks or recurrent for a long time, it is chronic diarrhea. It is recommended to visit the gastroenterology department of the hospital and other related departments to clarify the cause so as not to delay the condition. Patients are advised to pay attention to a reasonable diet, avoid overeating and eat more foods rich in vitamins and fiber to ensure intestinal health.
