Parents often bring their infant to the clinic because the infant has not had a bowel movement for 3 days. The infant is feeding well, has no vomiting or bloating, and is in good spirits. Is this normal? Sometimes, the vast majority of the nutrients from breast milk or formula are absorbed and the amount of stool decreases. The infant may not have enough bowel movements and may have less frequent bowel movements. Sometimes even once a week. Therefore, it is probably normal to go 4-5 days without having a bowel movement. Definition of constipation Usually, if the stool is soft and comes out easily after 4-5 days of not having a bowel movement, it is not called constipation. In constipation, the stool is very hard and not easy to pull out, and there is even blood on the surface. Constipation in infants is not an independent disease, but often a manifestation of certain diseases. If the infant has abdominal pain, vomiting or bloating, poor milk intake and poor spirit, the infant needs to be taken to the hospital for examination. Rare conditions such as intestinal obstruction have signs of digestive tract obstruction in addition to failure to relieve stool. Rare conditions such as congenital megacolon may manifest as constipation and will not relieve stools on their own. If the bowel movements are very infrequent (I don’t usually call it constipation), try the following 1. Try a different formula, but this is not an indication to stop breastfeeding. 2.You can feed a little water (for babies over 3-4 months), the amount of water should not take up the total amount of breastfeeding. 3.You can add some juice to the milk. 4.Use the infant open plug. Before using it, it is better to let the doctor check the following to exclude digestive tract diseases.
