Transformation from reoccurrence to leukemia!

I’ve been in a heavy mood lately because a very familiar child had a reversal of his condition in a short period of time, which was unexpected!

He was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, never had a blood transfusion, his usual platelets were around 70-80, HB was around 90, and he generally lived and learned okay. The day before yesterday, his mother suddenly called anxiously to reserve a bed, saying that his platelets had fallen to 8! After being hospitalized, I asked about his medical history, and last week a class organized an autumn trip to the playground High for a day, and then he developed a fever.

The result is that the 2nd day rechecking of the blood test suggests the appearance of infantile cells in the peripheral blood! Usually this is a sign of leukemia! How could this change when he was previously replete and the diagnosis was confirmed by bone marrow biopsy, smear, and chromosome breakage test? However, considering that the recent thrombocytopenia was too drastic to be adequately explained by a simple infection, the bone marrow was immediately rechecked and the verbal report was made that evening: acute myeloid leukemia!

What a surprise! The probability of having a reblast to leukemia is extremely low! And the original condition was stable! Never relied on blood transfusions!

Sometimes God fools people like that!

It is quite important for us doctors to catch the smallest changes, not to miss them, to evaluate them thoroughly and to analyze them in time! The everlasting truth in this world is that change is constant! Life is fragile, cherish every day!
