Can the “miracle needle” really cure facial paralysis?

Acupuncture is a unique therapy of traditional Chinese medicine in China, and it is effective in treating facial paralysis and other diseases. However, acupuncture is not a “miracle needle”, especially for the treatment of malignant tumors, should be regarded as a contraindication. The reporter learned yesterday from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University that recently, Auntie Shen from the east of Guangdong suffered from misdiagnosis and mistreatment, nearly allowing the cancer to spread. Six months ago, Auntie Shen woke up from sleep and suddenly found that her mouth was crooked, her family rushed him to the hospital, and for a few days, her condition did not improve, and her anxious family searched around for a “panacea”. The family immediately sent Auntie Shen to acupuncture, which was three months, but the facial paralysis not only did not improve, and even some aggravation, had to turn to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Professor Chen Weiliang, director of oral and maxillofacial surgery of the hospital, introduced that a tumor the size of a kiwi was growing under the ear of Auntie Shen, with a hard texture. After MRI examination, it was found that the tumor was close to the carotid artery. If the surgery was delayed any longer, it would greatly increase the difficulty and intraoperative risk. After three hours of surgery, the tumor under Chen’s ear was finally removed completely. According to Chen Weiliang, there are several cases of patients like Auntie Shen every year, and the mis-treatment by traveling doctors is distressing. Acupuncture therapy is not suitable for the treatment of head and neck tumor diseases; on the contrary, over-stimulation can also cause rapid proliferation and malignant transformation of tumors. For malignant tumors, over-stimulation will also accelerate the local spread and systemic metastasis of the tumor. Chen Weiliang pointed out that there are many causes of facial palsy, including central facial palsy caused by intracranial lesions, peripheral facial neuropathy caused by viral infection induced by cold stimulation, and facial palsy caused by local tumor compression in the parotid area or malignant tumor invading the facial nerve. If facial palsy symptoms occur, you should go to a regular hospital for early detection, early and correct diagnosis, and early and effective treatment. At present, surgery is the main way to treat parotid tumors. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University carries out a small incision minimally invasive parotid tumor surgery, which has a hidden scar and good aesthetic effect after surgery. However, Chen Weiliang also pointed out that not every patient is suitable for minimally invasive surgery, depending on the nature and size of the tumor and other comprehensive factors to judge. In recent years, the incidence of adolescent malignant tumors is on the rise. According to the statistics of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University on the cases of adolescent parotid tumors in the past five years, about 28% of the adolescents attending the hospital had malignant tumors. This should attract the attention of adolescents and parents.
