Facial palsy is a common neurological condition, mostly caused by facial neuritis, and is generally self-healing. The time of treatment varies depending on the severity of the lesion and the patient’s physical age. Most patients with facial palsy start to recover 2-4 weeks after the onset of the disease, and basically can recover completely in a month, individual will take longer and recovery may be slower 3-4 months after complete recovery. In patients with complete paralysis of the facial muscles, even without any treatment, 70% of them can still recover completely after 6 months from the onset of the disease. The key to recovery from facial palsy is early treatment. For patients without contraindications, short-term treatment with glucocorticoids can be used, usually with a treatment cycle of 5-7 days; in case of viral infection, antiviral treatment can be used, with a course of 7-10 days, along with nerve nutrition, B vitamins and other drugs injected for 2 weeks and then switched to oral treatment. Acupuncture and rehabilitation therapy can help the recovery of nerve function, and the treatment period can be extended appropriately for patients with slower recovery, usually about 1-3 months of treatment. Excessive acupuncture treatment has been reported to increase the occurrence of late facial muscle spasm, and there is some controversy. In conclusion, the treatment of facial palsy is a comprehensive and long-term process. Medication in the acute phase should be treated in a timely manner and in full amount and duration, hormone and antiviral treatment should be strictly followed, and neurotrophic, rehabilitation and acupuncture treatment can extend the treatment cycle as appropriate to promote the recovery of neurological function. For patients with more severe and complicated disease, rehabilitation treatment should be extended appropriately, and they can basically recover after 6 months in general.
