Precautions for elevated alpha fetoprotein

Increased alpha fetoprotein is a specific protein. It is produced during embryonic life by embryonic liver cells. Once born, this protein is no longer produced in the human body. Therefore, except for pregnant women and newborns, people should have no or only traces of this protein in their blood, i.e., below 20 micrograms per liter. Once the liver cells become cancerous, the function of producing this protein is restored. Therefore, a significant increase of alpha-fetoprotein in blood can be used as an indicator for the diagnosis of liver cancer. It is generally believed that the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma can be established with an alpha-fetoprotein level of 400 micrograms/liter or more. Of course, certain tumors of testes and ovaries, active hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, etc. can also sometimes be seen with significantly increased AFP, which should be distinguished with care. If it is early stage liver cancer, it cannot be reduced to normal, but if it is not liver cancer, it can be reduced to normal after a period of time. Note: 1. AFP should be less than 20 μg/L in normal people. AFP is an indicator for diagnosing liver cancer, but the standard for diagnosing liver cancer is greater than 400 micrograms/liter. 2.AFP between 20 and 400 micrograms/liter may be pregnancy, hepatitis or cirrhosis, gastrointestinal disease, etc. Of course, it may also be early stage liver cancer. Therefore, we should ask the physician to make a careful diagnosis, and the patient should not be nervous, but we should not take it lightly. 3.A fetoprotein above 400 mcg/L may also be testicular or ovarian, gastrointestinal disease, and occasionally hepatitis or cirrhosis may also reach this number, so we need to ask the doctor to make a careful diagnosis, and the patient should not be nervous. 4. The key to diagnosis is a careful ultrasound or CT examination. What is more important is to review the value of AFP regularly, if AFP decreases gradually, most of them are not problematic. 5.Fetoprotein is a diagnostic indicator, there is no medicine that can make it decrease, and there is nothing to pay attention to in life, there is only one point to pay attention to – regular review, once every half month to once a month.
