What is needed in the acute phase is the restoration of nutritional status. In the severe low weight state, the patient’s distorted cognition is just as severe and there is cognitive impairment, making psychotherapy difficult to be effective. As soon as weight gain begins, systematic psychotherapy, both individual and group, should be initiated, with continuous psychological intervention for at least 1 year. Many patients with eating disorders have specific psychosocial problems that require continuous support during the recovery process, sometimes for several years, but not once a week, but at intervals of up to two weeks or even months, called “back to basics” treatment. Patients with other psychiatric problems may require a combination of medications.
