I have recently performed several consecutive surgeries for adrenal tumors, all of which are advanced malignant tumors. Although technically it is not easy to complete these surgeries, as an operator, my heart is still heavy because I know that their overall prognosis is not good. In fact, all these patients live and work in the city, have good economic conditions, are well educated, have medical insurance, and have regular medical checkups organized by their units. But unfortunately, they all came to surgery because of advanced adrenal tumors. With so many favorable conditions, but they failed to detect the tumor in time and missed the best time for treatment, I can’t help but think, why is that? First of all, I would like to give you some knowledge about adrenal gland. It is a pair of organs located above the kidneys on both sides, which are more hidden and smaller, but it is a very important endocrine organ that secretes various hormones and controls and influences various physiological functions of human body. As the saying goes, small is small is the leader, very figuratively. Because it is small and hidden, so it is difficult to find it in general ultrasound during physical examination, or most physical examinations do not include this test. However, as we age, adrenal tumors still have a certain incidence, the total incidence above the age of 40 is about 4%, and if we calculate our national population base, we will know how many patients there will be, of course, most of them are benign and non-functional tumors. However, if the tumor is malignant, it tends to accelerate the growth, infiltrate and metastasize, and if it is functional, it tends to interfere a lot with the normal physiology of human body, for example, the occurrence of uncontrollable hypertension. Therefore, my opinion is that over 40 years old, you should have a more detailed whole body checkup, at least a CT of the chest and a CT of the whole abdomen is necessary, so that you can determine the health of your adrenal glands from morphology very clearly. If there is any problem, further check with a specialist. Humanity is developing and society is progressing, I hope the progress of technology can bring happiness to people, as a professional and technical person, I have the responsibility and obligation to make advanced technology for the benefit of human beings. I am a surgeon, but I don’t want to be a tired firefighter. My greatest hope is that I can use my knowledge to do more preventive work and popularize scientific knowledge to prevent problems before they happen.
