Prostate cancer therapeutic effects of some natural drugs

In the late 1980s, the United States began using a combination of purely natural plant extracts called PC-SPES to treat prostate cancer, which is composed of eight herbs, including palm seeds, scutellaria, and licorice. Studies have shown that the components of the individual herbs not only have individual anti-tumor properties, but also have synergistic effects between the various components to slow down the progression of prostate cancer. In addition, studies have also shown that PC-SPES itself is a very effective estrogen-like product that reduces serum levels of testosterone and prostate-specific antigen in patients with androgen-dependent prostate cancer. The alcoholic extract of SPES inhibited the proliferation of a variety of tumor cell lines, including prostate cancer cells. The New York Medical Hsieh study found that PC-SPES inhibited the proliferation of CaP cells cultured in vitro with a chronotropic and quantitative relationship.Taille et al. found that PC-SPES induced apoptosis not only in hormone-sensitive prostate cancer cells INCaP cells, but also in hormone-insensitive cells PCI-3 and DUI45 cells. It was reported at that time that in patients with hormone-dependent prostate cancer, taking 9 capsules of PC-SPES daily, blood PSA levels decreased by more than 80% in all patients, and PSA decreased to zero in 64% of patients, and blood PSA remained at low levels for 46.5 weeks, and tumor volume decreased by more than 50% in 74% of patients; in non-hormone-dependent prostate cancer patients, PSA decreased by more than 50% in 54% of patients. Adverse effects mainly include loss of libido, feminized male breast development, diarrhea, venous thrombosis and lower limb cramps. In China, the main ingredients of the Chinese herbal compound Zijinlong are licorice, lobelia and salvia. Studies have shown that Zijinlong can significantly improve the proliferation and invasiveness of metastatic prostate cancer in vitro, indicating its inhibitory effect on prostate cancer. Nan Xunyi et al [31] used Chinese herbal medicine opium oil cream locally or intravenously for the treatment of intermediate to advanced prostate cancer without adverse effects. As a result, the prostate cancer swelling and hard nodes shrank and PSA decreased, and a better efficacy was received. The mechanism of its treatment for prostate cancer is that a large number of drug particles enter the cancer cells, hinder DNA synthesis, inhibit cancer cell growth, destroy cancer cell structure and lead to cancer cell death, which can have a therapeutic effect on both androgen-dependent and non-dependent prostate cancer. Compared with orchiectomy and radiotherapy alone, the recent efficacy of opium oil injection in the treatment of intermediate and advanced prostate cancer is satisfactory and there are no side effects.
