Colchicine for gout relief can usually be taken for a few days

Gout can be controlled by taking colchicine for about a week during an acute attack and then reducing or stopping the dosage. In case of recurrent attacks causing chronic disease, the medication should be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Colchicine is the classic drug for the treatment of acute attacks of gouty arthritis. Colchicine, as a traditional and effective treatment, is effective in at least 80% of patients when applied early in the attack. However, due to the large oral dose, which is similar to the toxic dose of colchicine, patients are prone to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other adverse reactions, so it is not recommended for long-term use and has a high side effect on the kidneys. Now it is advocated to use small doses of colchicine for the treatment and prevention of acute gout, with fewer side effects. If the patient’s pain decreases it is recommended to go to a regular hospital for a detailed examination in time. Gout patients are advised to strictly control their diet, avoid overeating and limit the intake of high purine foods, such as animal offal, seafood and meat foods.
